Suva, Fiji – February 22, 2026 – Fiji-based retail chain CJS Supermarket has acquired Swanson, Niue’s largest supermarket, marking the company’s first international expansion. The purchase, finalized recently, signals a growing trend of Fijian businesses investing in other Pacific Island nations.
CJS Supermarket, which currently operates four outlets across Fiji, did not disclose the purchase price for the Niuean supermarket. The acquisition represents a significant milestone for the steadily growing brand, according to company executives.
“Their professionalism and commitment made this new chapter possible,” said Namrata Charan Singh, Executive Director of CJS Supermarket, acknowledging the previous owners, John, Anne, and Chris Heise, for their cooperation during the transition. The statement was released alongside announcements of the acquisition earlier today.
Executives at CJS Supermarket cited Niue’s stable market and strong cultural and economic ties with Fiji as key factors in the decision to expand to the island nation. A substantial Fijian community residing in Niue was also identified as a significant consideration, representing a familiar customer base.
The company plans to leverage the acquisition to export a wide range of goods directly from Fiji to Niue, aiming to increase product variety and ensure a more reliable supply of familiar Fijian brands for Niuean consumers. CJS Supermarket currently offers a range of groceries, vegetables, liquor, and household needs, and provides online shopping with drive-thru pickup options in Fiji.
According to a statement released on Facebook by CJS Supermarket, Swanson Supermarket will now operate under the CJS Supermarket name. The company has committed to maintaining high standards of customer service and expanding product choices for shoppers in Niue.
The expansion is part of CJS Supermarket’s broader regional growth strategy, with the company expressing its intention to turn into a trusted part of everyday life in Niue. The acquisition was reported by Fiji Times two days prior to today’s announcement.
