Lexington, KY – No. 17 Kentucky advanced to the Southeastern Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday, fueled by a career performance from guard Clara Strack. The Wildcats defeated Georgia 76-61, with Strack delivering a dominant showing that propelled her team forward.
Strack’s performance wasn’t just a standout individual effort; it marked a significant moment in SEC Tournament history. She tied her career high with 33 points, a feat punctuated by a career-best five three-pointers, alongside eight rebounds, three blocked shots, two assists, and one steal. This performance ranks as the second-highest point total by a Kentucky player in the SEC Tournament, trailing only the legendary Valarie Still’s 34 points scored in 1982, according to UK Athletics.
The Wildcats’ victory was a team effort, with Teonni Key contributing a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Tonie Morgan adding 14 points and seven assists. Kentucky’s strong offensive showing and defensive pressure proved too much for Georgia to overcome.
Strack’s Dominance Sets the Tone
Kentucky quickly established control, responding to Georgia’s initial two points with a basket from Strack and a pair of layups from Key to grab a 6-2 lead. Strack continued to be a key offensive force, matching a three-point play by Georgia with one of her own, and then extending the lead with another three-pointer, bringing the score to 12-5. Despite Georgia’s attempts to close the gap, Strack consistently answered, finishing the first quarter with 13 points as Kentucky led 20-16.
The second quarter saw a back-and-forth battle, with Georgia briefly taking the lead at 26-24 before Strack ignited a five-point run, regaining the advantage for Kentucky. The half ended with a narrow 36-35 lead for the Wildcats, with Strack leading all scorers with 18 points.
Second-Half Surge Secures Victory
Strack continued her hot streak in the third quarter, scoring the first six points for Kentucky and extending their lead to 41-38. Despite Georgia’s efforts to stay within striking distance, Strack’s nine points in the quarter helped the Wildcats build a 54-49 lead heading into the final period. She had amassed 27 points through three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Kentucky pulled away, sparked by another scoring burst from Strack. After Georgia narrowed the gap to 60-56, Strack scored four consecutive points, followed by free throws from Amelia Hassett, extending the lead to 68-56. Hassett later added a three-pointer and two free throws to seal the victory.
Next Up: Showdown with South Carolina
Kentucky’s win sets up a quarterfinal matchup against top-seeded South Carolina on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for noon ET and will be broadcast on ESPN, as reported by A Sea of Blue. The Wildcats will need another strong performance from Strack and continued contributions from Key and Morgan to challenge the Gamecocks.
The team’s success hinges on maintaining the momentum generated by Strack’s exceptional play and the overall team effort demonstrated against Georgia. Fans can look forward to a competitive game as Kentucky aims to advance further in the SEC Tournament.
