Claude Surges to Top 10 US App Store After Viral Super Bowl Ads

Anthropic’s Super Bowl advertisements, which satirized generic chatbot advice and advertising, propelled the company’s Claude application to the seventh-ranked position in the U.S. App Store, a significant jump from its previous ranking of 41st, according to data from Appfigures reported by TechCrunch.

The ads featured scenarios where users seeking advice from artificial intelligence received absurd responses, such as being directed to dating apps for older women when asking how to improve communication with their mothers. This campaign aimed to highlight Claude’s differentiating feature: a commitment to an ad-free user experience.

Between Sunday and Tuesday, following the Super Bowl broadcast, Claude recorded 148,000 installations across iOS and Android devices in the United States, a 32% increase compared to the three days prior, Appfigures data showed. Daily downloads rose from an average of 37,400 to nearly 50,000.

The timing of Anthropic’s campaign coincided with OpenAI’s introduction of advertisements for free ChatGPT users, creating a stark contrast that reinforced the message presented in the Anthropic commercials. This juxtaposition served as a real-world demonstration of the “no ads” promise central to Anthropic’s marketing strategy, as noted by Fortune.

The surge in interest in Claude also followed the recent release of the model Opus 4.6, which provided the technical foundation to support the influx of recent users. This launch marked a turnaround for Claude’s mobile presence. When initially launched for iOS in May 2024, the application reached only the 55th position in the Apple App Store, while ChatGPT already dominated the market with millions of installations.

According to CNN, the clash between Anthropic and OpenAI over the Super Bowl advertisements signals a new era in the competition within the artificial intelligence industry. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly criticized Anthropic’s ads as “clearly dishonest,” escalating the dispute, as reported by CNBC.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Anthropic’s Super Bowl ad debut was a direct challenge to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. With a 15% increase in overall downloads in the last week, Anthropic is transitioning from a technical alternative to a significant competitor in the AI landscape.
