Bogata (Colombia) ∙ One of the ‘cocaine hippos’ raised by drug lord Pablo Escobar has died in a car accident. A hippo was hit by an SUV while wandering on the road. The occupants of the vehicle were not injured.
In the eighties, Escobar illegally brought hippos from Africa and started raising them in his own zoo. After Escobar was killed in a gunfight in 1993, most of the other animals were removed, but relocating the hippos was not easy. As these increased to 160, Colombia decided to give 60 to India and 10 to Mexico.
