Cologne Anti-Racism Rally: March & Demonstration on March 21st

Köln is bracing for a large-scale demonstration against racism and in support of democracy this Saturday, March 21st. Organized by the civil society alliance “Köln stellt sich quer” (Cologne Stands Up), the event coincides with the International Day against Racism, a global observance dedicated to raising awareness about discrimination and right-wing extremism.

The demonstration will accept the form of a “Sternmarsch” – a star march – with participants converging from three starting points: Ottoplatz at 1:00 PM, Chlodwigplatz and Ebertplatz at 1:30 PM. All routes will lead to a central rally scheduled to initiate at 3:00 PM on either Friesenplatz or Rudolfplatz, according to organizers. The event aims to send a strong signal against the rising tide of extremist ideologies and to reaffirm commitment to democratic values.

A Response to Rising Extremism

The organizers of “Köln stellt sich quer” cite growing concerns about the influence of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) and other far-right parties as a primary motivation for the demonstration. A joint statement released by the alliance asserts that these groups pose a threat to democratic institutions, artistic freedom, freedom of expression, and social cohesion. The call to action emphasizes the importance of a clear commitment to human rights, international law, and a diverse, inclusive society.

The International Day against Racism serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing struggle against discrimination worldwide. The day commemorates the Sharpeville massacre of 1960, when South African police killed 69 unarmed Black protesters demonstrating against apartheid laws. Today, it is observed globally as a day to reflect on the pervasive nature of racism and to renew efforts to combat it in all its forms.

Demonstration Details and Participation

Participants are encouraged to join the Sternmarsch at any of the designated starting points. The rally will feature speakers and performances intended to amplify the message of solidarity and resistance against racism. “Köln stellt sich quer” is actively inviting broad participation from across civil society, urging individuals and organizations to demonstrate their support for a more just and equitable future.

Further information about the demonstration, including detailed route maps and a schedule of events, can be found on the alliance’s website: www.kssq.de. The event is likewise highlighted by the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland, underscoring the broad coalition of support behind the initiative. The Evangelical Church in the Rhineland published information about the event on March 6, 2026.

Pulse of Europe, a pro-European movement, also supports the demonstration, noting the strengthening of right-wing and racist parties across Europe and the disregard for democratic principles. Pulse of Europe highlights the influence of figures like Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in fostering these trends.

Previous demonstrations against racism in Köln have seen significant participation from local schools. In 2025, schools in Ehrenfeld organized a similar Sternmarsch and rally, with students carrying signs and playing instruments as they marched to Lenauplatz. Die Eichendorff-Realschule participated in the 2025 event. Local media, including WDR Lokalzeit, covered the school-led initiative, showcasing the community’s commitment to diversity. Lokalzeit aus Köln reported on the event.

As March 21st approaches, organizers are preparing for a significant turnout and are urging participants to come prepared for a peaceful yet powerful demonstration of solidarity. The event represents a critical moment for Köln to reaffirm its commitment to inclusivity and to stand against the forces of division and hate.
