Companies Step Up: Training and Hiring 250,000 Women Refugees from Ukraine and Europe at a Historic Conference

Dozens of large international companies have agreed to train and hire over 250,000 women refugees from Ukraine and refugees from other countries in Europe. The companies, including companies with branches in Germany, made this commitment on Monday in Paris at a conference organized by the “Tent Partnership for Refugees” organization.

This was brought to life by the Kurdish entrepreneur Hamdi Ulukaya, who made billions as an immigrant in the USA. The large temporary employment agencies alone want to place around 150,000 refugees in work.

Since there is no end in sight to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it is essential to offer the millions of refugees there long-term integration and hope through integration into the labor market, said Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas.

The commitment of the companies will enable tens of thousands of Ukrainians to care for their relatives at home. “Refugee women from Ukraine have to overcome many hurdles in their search for work – from a lack of knowledge of the local language to childcare,” said Hamdi Ulukaya.

The economy must help remove these hurdles and enable those affected to start work. “All refugees who find a job are no longer refugees from this moment on.” A special focus of the initiative is on Poland, which is home to the largest group of Ukrainian refugees with 1.5 million. (awp/sda/dpa)
