Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday compared the destruction caused by the fighting in Bakhmut, a city in eastern Ukraine that Moscow claimed to have captured, to that of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by the United States in 1945.

“I can honestly say that the photos of destroyed Hiroshima remind me of Bakhmout. There is absolutely nothing alive, all the buildings are destroyed (…) an absolute and total destruction”, declared Mr. Zelensky during a press conference on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Japan.

“Today, Hiroshima is a rebuilt city and we dream of rebuilding our cities which are currently in ruins,” said the Ukrainian president.

The scene of the longest and deadliest battle in the war that began in February 2022, Bakhmout, a city of some 70,000 inhabitants before the conflict, has been devastated by the fighting.

Aerial images of Bakhmout show charred and crumbling buildings and streets littered with debris.

The atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States took place on August 6 and August 9, 1945 during World War II, causing the Japanese government to capitulate.

Mr. Zelensky gathered Sunday in front of the cenotaph of the victims of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, on the sidelines of the G7 summit organized in the Japanese city.

The bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 claimed around 140,000 lives.
