Concrete is by far the most used building material in the world – around 30 billion tons of it are used every year. Concrete production makes a significant contribution to climate change: over the past 20 years, emissions from the industry have increased to 2.9 billion tons of CO2 more than doubled per year. That’s around eight percent of global CO2emissions and more greenhouse gases than the EU or India emit. In Austria, a research consortium of ten companies is now looking for solutions to make the building material more sustainable.
