The man chanted slogans in Russian once morest fascism and Vladimir Putin.

Thierry Baudet, a fan of conspiracy theories, held a conference Thursday evening at UGent, invited by the conservative student association KVHV.

The conference was held under heavy police surveillance.

The man was immediately subdued and arrested. He was administratively arrested, said the Ghent police. He was therefore deprived of his liberty for a maximum period of 12 hours. The prosecution will decide whether to initiate legal proceedings such as presentation to an investigating judge.

The politician, a member of the far-right Eurosceptic and anti-immigration Dutch party Forum voor Democracy (FVD), was visibly shocked, although without any apparent injury. He held his conference in front of around 300 people, including the founder of the Flemish nationalist movement Schild & Vrienden, Dries Van Langenhove.

UGent was forced by the Council of State to accept the arrival of the Dutch politician, although it wanted to avoid it for security reasons. Seized for interim relief, the High Court considered that the university was able to ensure the security necessary for holding this conference and must make its infrastructure available to the KVHV.

Thierry Baudet has distinguished himself in the past for his conspiratorial thoughts and his pro-Russian opinions.
