Continuous actions through the “Symsite” project in the Municipality of Western Achaia – 2024-07-27 18:57:31

The actions carried out by the Municipality of Western Achaia for recycling and waste management through the European Symsite program continue.

In the last six months, there have been several information campaigns, conferences and workshops with the active participation of people from the scientific, business sector and aware citizens of Western Achaia regarding sewage and waste.

“The project represents an important step towards a more sustainable future where the urban and industrial sectors can work together to create a cleaner and more efficient environment. We are moving towards a more sustainable one”, said the Mayor of Western Achaia Grigoris Alexopoulos.

Achievements to date:

The Hellenic EcoSite pilot has been fully assembled and has been operating since November 2023, using industrial waste water, municipal waste water and liquids from the Brown Bin Network.

A space has been created where this pilot application will run.

Community engagement campaigns have been conducted to inform residents about the project and encourage their participation.

Initial results show that wastewater from the Patras Oil Refineries (EEP) enhances biogas production in the Anaerobic Membrane Treatment (AnMBR) process.

The project expects several key outcomes, such as:

Improved treatment processes for municipal and industrial wastewater.

Increased biogas production through anaerobic fermentation.

Development of an integrated model of industrial-urban symbiosis that can be replicated in other areas.

Improved community awareness and participation in sustainable practices.
