Control Resonant: New Gameplay, Combat & Details From Remedy’s Sequel

The reveal trailer for Control Resonant, the highly anticipated sequel to the acclaimed 2019 game Control, has set the stage for a fresh narrative direction. Players will no longer step into the shoes of Jesse Faden. instead, the story centers on her brother, Dylan Faden. This transition marks a significant shift in gameplay and environment, as players will explore a reimagined Manhattan, which has been drastically altered by the escape of the malevolent force known as The Hiss.

Unlike the previous game’s focus on the Brutalist architecture of The Oldest House, Control Resonant takes players into a city that has folded in on itself, reminiscent of Inception’s reality-bending visuals. Dylan will also wield a latest weapon: the Aberrant, a massive hammer that allows for close-quarters combat, diverging from Jesse’s iconic transforming Service Weapon.

At a recent Sony State of Play event, Remedy showcased gameplay that revealed a faster-paced, action-oriented experience. Lead gameplay designer Sergey Mohov emphasized that this title is not a soulslike game but rather an “action-driven, aggressive-playstyle action game,” where players take charge of combat dynamics.

Enhanced Gameplay Mechanics

Remedy has labeled Control Resonant as an action-RPG, though it will not feature extensive gear or inventory management. As creative director Mikael Kasurinen noted, “It’s not a survival game; it’s an action game.” The game introduces Talents, which serve as the foundation for combat abilities and weapon enhancements. For example, the Perfect Dodge mechanic offers players a temporary attack boost if they successfully time their dodges.

Players will have opportunities to customize their builds in an area called The Gap, akin to Alan Wake 2’s Mind Place, where they can experiment with various abilities earned from defeating enemies known as Resonants. This system allows players to tailor their combat style, including the potential to turn enemies into allies.

A New Era in Manhattan

The game world is divided into distinct districts, each designed to offer visual variety and a more intuitive map experience than its predecessor. Players will engage in two primary quest types: Dylan’s Journey, the main narrative path and World Quests, which serve as side missions. Players can encounter smaller, unmarked gameplay moments that reveal secrets and lore.

One of the new characters, Zoe de Vera, provides guidance to Dylan throughout the campaign. Music plays a crucial role in the game, enhancing world-building and player immersion, as noted by Kasurinen. The revamped dialogue system allows players to make choices whereas moving, fostering a more dynamic interaction experience.

Fast-Paced Action and Technical Improvements

Early gameplay footage showcases a significant increase in the game’s pace compared to the original Control. Players can expect rapid movements and a flurry of attacks, with combat scenarios featuring multiple enemies rather than isolated encounters. The game is described as fast, drawing comparisons to titles like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta.

Remedy has optimized its Northlight engine to improve draw distances and accommodate more on-screen enemies while aiming for a stable 60 frames per second across all platforms. The developers confirmed that while some enemies will respawn, the mechanics surrounding this feature are tied closely to the game’s narrative, which remains under wraps.

Looking Ahead

As Control Resonant is still in its alpha development stage, further details regarding the narrative and characters will be revealed closer to release. Remedy has indicated that players do not need to have played the original Control to enjoy this sequel, making it accessible for newcomers to the franchise.

While a specific release date has yet to be confirmed, there is speculation regarding a launch in the latter half of 2026. With the crowded gaming calendar that year, including the impending release of Grand Theft Auto 6, fans are eager to spot how Remedy positions its title for optimal visibility in the market.

As players anticipate the return to the world of Control, the focus on fast-paced action, character-driven narrative, and immersive environments promises to elevate the series to new heights. Engagement with the community is encouraged, and fans are invited to share their thoughts and excitement as more details unfold.
