A controversial mosquito control operation is to take place this Wednesday in Saintes (Charente-Maritime). Indeed, local elected officials and residents oppose the use of a non-selective insecticide to fight once morest tiger mosquitoes in the town. Baptized deltamethrin, this product was to be spread at dawn in the station district, reports The Parisian.

A “controlled operation”

The regional health agency (ARS) had decided to carry out this operation following the return of a resident carrying a viral disease recently contracted during a stay abroad. Invited to move his hives to protect them, a beekeeper from the town warned of the dangers of deltamethrin. “Pollinating fauna is not limited to honey bees. This insecticide is not selective and kills the living”, he hammered.

“On the grounds of killing mosquitoes, the ARS is ready to spread an insecticide, the use of which has long been very controversial in agriculture because it is too dangerous for bees and aquatic environments”, denounced the deputy (EELV) Benoît Biteau in a press release. For its part, the ARS spoke of a “controlled operation”.
