Controversy at the Christmas market: the City of Liège has an advertising car removed

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

As the Ecolo regional deputy Olivier Bierin summarizes in a message posted on Twitter, “one can wonder regarding the advisability of exhibiting a large SUV in the public space” – on the sidelines of the Christmas market – as well as on the interest in heating this space.

Arrested, the Liège authorities reacted publicly on Wednesday.

“I was very surprised, like many of you, by the presence of a car in a glass cube on the pedestrian area of Place Cathédrale. This is an initiative of the organizer of the Christmas rink, with which the City is linked via a multi-year agreement. The vehicle was installed on the public pedestrian space, without having the necessary authorization, explained the mayor of the City, Willy Demeyer. Therefore, I asked the latter to quickly remove the vehicle. »

“For several years, the College has made a point of refusing invasive devices or those that can be perceived as such, continues the elected official in a message posted on Facebook. We are often put on the fait accompli, the managers not asking for the necessary authorizations beforehand. In the present case, this does not constitute a good layout of the premises and it comes into direct confrontation with the heritage”, namely the Virgin Delcour.
