Visitors to Casablanca’s famous Mohammed V Square, better known as “Pigeon Square”, disapprove of local authorities’ decision to ban the feeding of stray birds and animals.

The company Casablanca Environnement, in collaboration with the municipality of Casablanca, recently put a sign in this square to remind citizens of the ban on feeding stray birds and animals, in accordance with the law. The decision is making people unhappy. This concerns in particular sellers of cereal grains and corn, the preferred food of pigeons, as well as photographers, who will find themselves without a source of income.

A corn grain seller described the decision as “unfair”, indicating that this activity is “her only source of income”. “We love pigeons, we even consider feeding them a good deed for which we will be rewarded, we stay here for long hours, exposed to the strong heat of the sun or the freezing cold,” she told Alyaoum24. Visitors to the famous square have also criticized this measure which deprives them of the pleasure of giving food to the pigeons.
