Zurich, Switzerland – Coop, Switzerland’s second-largest retailer, reported record sales and increased profits for 2025, defying strong competition in the country’s retail sector. The cooperative announced a net profit of 606 million Swiss francs, a rise of 21 million francs compared to the previous year, during a press conference held at a supermarket in the Zurich area.
The company’s overall revenue grew by 2.3% to reach a record 35.5 billion Swiss francs, after adjusting for currency effects, according to a statement released Tuesday. This performance surpasses that of its main competitor, Migros, which recorded a revenue of 31.9 billion francs in 2025 following the sale of several subsidiaries.
“I am very proud of the results because we have experienced growth in both retail and wholesale,” said Coop CEO Philipp Wyss, speaking from the bakery section of the Zurich-area supermarket. Wyss highlighted the company’s success in gaining market share across various sectors.
Coop’s retail sales totaled 21.2 billion francs, with supermarkets – including online platform Coop.ch – contributing 12.4 billion francs, a 2.6% increase year-on-year. The company has been expanding its network of stores, opening 12 new locations in 2025, bringing the total to 982. Coop aims to reach 1,000 supermarkets throughout Switzerland in 2026.
Beyond traditional supermarkets, Coop has also seen growth in specialized formats such as Coop City, Interdiscount, Jumbo, Coop Vitality, and Update Fitness. These specialized markets generated a net revenue of 7.8 billion francs. Online sales through Coop.ch increased by 10.2% to 375 million francs.
According to reports, Coop has been actively renovating stores, particularly in border regions, to counter foreign competition, specifically mentioning efforts in Geneva and Ticino. The company is also focusing on increasing local production, including in-store bakeries, to offer fresher products. Wyss noted particular success in meat and fish sales within the French-speaking region of Switzerland.
“Everywhere there is market share, we have gained it,” Wyss stated during the press conference. The company reported a significant increase in customer foot traffic, with 60,000 more customers visiting its stores daily in 2025.
