The coronavirus that causes Covid-19 can remain active on the skin for up to nine hours, according to a new article published by a team of Japanese researchers.
Since the start of the global pandemic of infection caused by the coronavirus, hand hygiene has been one of the top three ways to slow the spread of the disease.
The importance of this precaution was highlighted by research conducted by scientists at Kyoto School of Medicine in Japan.
The team studied the persistence of two viruses – SARS-CoV-2 and the influenza virus IAV – on human skin, as well as the effectiveness of an 80% concentration of ethanol (alcohol) on viruses. .
They found that viruses survived less on human skin than on other surfaces such as plastic, steel and glass, but at the same time.
However, the coronavirus remained active on the skin longer than the flu virus, nine hours for the Covid compared to less than two hours for the flu.
When treated with the ethanol solution, however, both viruses were inactive within 15 seconds. Hand sanitizer available in stores would have this effect, provided the alcohol concentration is high enough.
The study was carried out using skin samples taken from corpses during the autopsy. The post-mortem skin results were also compared to skin tests on six live subjects, and the results were confirmed.
