Coronavirus: USA freeze entry from Europe

The United States has imposed a general entry ban on people wishing to travel to the United States from Europe for 30 days because of the corona virus. According to President Trump, the entry ban is due to come into effect on Friday at midnight US time.

Because of the spread of the corona virus, the United States imposes an entry ban for foreigners from Europe. “We will suspend all travel from Europe to the United States for the next 30 days,” Trump said at a White House night address to the nation. Americans who undergo appropriate tests are exempt. The measure also does not apply to travelers from Great Britain.

Trump said on the grounds that the EU had not taken the same protective measures as the US and had not stopped traveling from China to Europe early enough. Trump had already blocked entry for foreign travelers who had been to China the previous 14 days in late January. The Coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 had spread from China. At the end of February, the US president then issued a corresponding regulation for foreigners who had been in Iran in the two weeks before. At the same time, travel information for affected parts of the country in Italy and South Korea was tightened. The virus has spread rapidly in Iran, South Korea and Italy.

“Europe is a unique problem”

Trump said at a meeting with bank executives on Wednesday that the crisis was waning in China and Asia. “As you know, we have another part of the world, Europe, which is in a very difficult state.” Shortly before, Executive Vice Minister of Homeland Security Ken Cuccinelli said at a congressional hearing that travel restrictions for Europe were being considered. “Europe is a unique problem.”

The reason for this is that there is cross-border freedom of movement in the Schengen area. This raises the question of “how to treat Europe as a whole”. The director of the National Institute for Infectious Diseases in the United States, Anthony Fauci, said at a congressional hearing that the virus would continue to spread to the United States. “The bottom line will be worse.”

Fauci called on people to adapt their behavior to the crisis. “How much worse it will be will depend on our ability to do two things: contain the influx of people who are infected from outside, and the ability to contain and mitigate in our own country.” To date, at least 37 people in the United States have died from Covid 19 disease. According to statistics from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, more than 1,100 people in the United States are now infected with the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus. The number of unreported cases is likely to be significantly higher because, according to the CDC health agency, only a little over 11,000 people have been tested for the virus so far.

US stock markets collapse again

Tests delivered in the USA after the outbreak of the crisis sometimes gave incorrect results, and there were also bottlenecks. Critics accuse Trump of not reacting energetically enough to the crisis. The spread of the virus has led to dramatic falls in US stock markets. Trump’s government is currently negotiating with Congress on a package of measures to contain the economic impact of the virus.

The US stock markets collapsed again on Wednesday. Trump announced on Monday that he would talk to Congress about, among other things, wage tax relief and small business loans. Aid is also planned for people who are paid on an hourly wage and who do not receive any salary in the event of illness. Talks with airlines, cruise operators and the hotel industry are also planned.

The spread of the virus also has an impact on the American sports world: the basketball league NBA interrupts its season indefinitely because of the Covid 19 pandemic. The league announced this decision in the evening (local time) and at the same time confirmed a positive test by a player of the NBA club Utah Jazz.

Tom Hanks infected with corona virus

It was also announced that the US actor Tom Hanks and his wife were infected with the novel corona virus. As the 63-year-old announced in a message in the online networks, the couple will now remain in quarantine for the time being.

During a recent trip to Australia, he and his wife Rita Wilson felt feverish and tired, the actor, known from films such as “Forrest Gump” and “Philadelphia”, wrote. They then had themselves tested for the corona virus and the test was positive.
