Costco will arrive in Bas-Saint-Laurent following the sale of land which will allow it to open its first warehouse store in the region, arousing enthusiasm and concern among merchants and the population.

After the decision of the City of Rimouski, the Rimouski-Neigette Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIRN) welcomed with “enthusiasm” the arrival of the chain of warehouse stores.

“The arrival of the American giant is good news for our local economy. This company, recognized for its unique business model, will attract a significant clientele not only from Rimouski, but also from neighboring MRCs,” it was noted in a statement published on Facebook, adding that there are “challenges predictable”.

The debate regarding the arrival of Costco in Rimouski is not new, while several small merchants are opposed to the multinational’s project.

Entrepreneurs in the sector fear the impact of opening a Costco on their workforce as well as on competition.

The CCIRN ensures that it is “aware” of the challenges that small traders will have to face following the opening of the warehouse store.

Measures will be put in place to ensure good cohesion between Costco and businesses in the region, we assure.

“We will be monitoring these impacts and working with our members and local authorities to reduce potential negative effects. It is also crucial to quickly develop housing to accommodate new workers who might be attracted by the employment opportunities created by Costco,” said the general director of the CCIRN, Jean-Nicolas Marchand.

Costco has 23 warehouse stores in Quebec, according to data consulted in its 2022 annual report.
