Morocco received on Friday a batch of 600,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine when it decided to extend its vaccination campaign to the youngest and this in the midst of a resurgence of new cases of Covid-19, said Said Afif, member of the scientific committee of the Ministry of Health.
Morocco has the largest number of people vaccinated in Africa to date, having administered 27.3 million Sinopharm and AstraZeneca vaccines in addition to 300,000 doses developed by Johnson and Johnson, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
“The new delivery is essential to strengthen the vaccination campaign in Morocco which will be extended to people aged 12 to 17,” Afif said, quoted by Reuters news agency.
Last month, the country reinstated some restrictive measures to contain a wave of new coronavirus variants after daily recorded cases reached more than 9,000 infections.
Morocco has recorded 752,076 cases of infection and 10,933 deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic which has severely affected the tourism sector.
