MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – No. 19 West Virginia delivered a dominant performance Saturday, overwhelming Oklahoma State 72-40 in a Big 12 matchup at Hope Coliseum. The Mountaineers’ stifling defense and efficient offense proved too much for the shorthanded Cowgirls, securing a key victory as both teams approach the Big 12 Tournament. This contest marked a significant win for West Virginia, clinching a Top 4 seed in the upcoming tournament.
The loss was particularly damaging for Oklahoma State, which entered the game projected as an 8 seed and seeking a crucial Quad 1 win to bolster their NCAA Tournament resume. Instead, the Cowgirls suffered a season-low scoring output and shot a dismal 24% from the field, falling to 21-8 overall and 10-6 in conference play. The Mountaineers, now 22-6 and 12-4 in the Big 12, showcased their strength on their home court, extending their winning streak to five of their last six games.
West Virginia came out firing, establishing control early with an 8-0 run fueled by sharp shooting and aggressive defense. Syndey Shaw opened the scoring with a three-pointer, followed quickly by a steal and score, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. The Mountaineers’ full-court press immediately disrupted Oklahoma State’s offense, forcing 16 turnovers that resulted in 17 points for West Virginia.
The Cowgirls struggled to navigate the pressure, finding it difficult to even advance the ball across midcourt. Oklahoma State’s offensive woes were compounded by the absence of Jadyn Wooten, a key ball handler and playmaker who was unavailable for the game, listed as doubtful earlier in the day.
Despite a brief attempt to adjust with a zone defense late in the first quarter, Oklahoma State couldn’t contain West Virginia’s offensive firepower. The Mountaineers responded by draining six of eight three-point attempts in the second quarter, finishing the half on a 12-0 run and building a commanding 49-23 lead. The second quarter saw West Virginia extend their lead with a dominant 18-2 stretch.
Mountaineers Dominate Second Half
The third quarter saw a sluggish start for both teams, but West Virginia ultimately maintained control. Whereas the Mountaineers didn’t score their first basket until the 7:24 mark, they quickly regained momentum, while the Cowgirls struggled to find the basket, shooting just 2-of-17 from the field for five points. West Virginia extended their lead to 34 points heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter proved to be largely a formality, with West Virginia comfortably holding onto their substantial lead. The Mountaineers won the final period 12-10, but the game was effectively decided long before.
Heard Sets Program Record in Loss
Despite the lopsided score, Stailee Heard provided a bright spot for Oklahoma State, leading the team with 13 points and setting a recent program record with her 272nd career three-pointer. Though, her accomplishment came in a losing effort, as the Cowgirls shot just 5-of-26 from beyond the arc. Heard and Amari Whiting each grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Leading scorer Micah Gray struggled mightily, finishing with just 3 points on 1-of-14 shooting.
Gia Cooke led West Virginia with a game-high 21 points, while Kierra Wheeler added an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double. The Mountaineers shot 51% from the field and 40% from three-point range, showcasing their offensive efficiency.
What’s Next for Both Teams
West Virginia’s victory secures a Top 4 seed in the Big 12 Tournament, positioning them favorably for a deep run. Oklahoma State, now 21-8 will look to rebound as they head to Ames to face Iowa State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CT inside Hilton Coliseum. The Cowgirls will need to quickly address their offensive struggles and find a way to generate more consistent scoring if they hope to finish the season strong.
