Coyle Wins Boyle County’s First State Swim Title | KHSAA Championships 2026

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Clark Coyle etched his name into Boyle County High School history Friday night, capturing the boys’ 50-yard freestyle at the KHSAA State Swimming & Diving Championships. This victory marks the first state swimming championship for a Boyle County swimmer.

The senior’s winning time of 20.65 seconds at the Lancaster Aquatic Center edged out Kellie Tobergte of Murray by a mere 0.03 seconds – a margin Coyle described as “the blink of an eye.” This hard-fought win culminated a career dedicated to reaching the top of the podium.

“It’s a very special feeling for sure,” Coyle said. “It makes it even sweeter given that since my freshman year I’ve been competing for a state championship, and I finally get it my senior year.” Coyle’s strategy centered on a strong start, and turn. “I knew what I had to do to win that event, and I did exactly what I had to do,” he explained. “Basically, all I think about whenever I start that 50 free is hitting my turn, getting to 25 first and getting off that wall. My underwater is quality, but going home I’m not the fastest on top of the water, so I knew I had to have the lead.”

The Boyle County team enjoyed a successful meet finishing eighth in the boys’ team standings and 12th in the girls’ standings, while similarly setting multiple school records. Coyle acknowledged the team’s collective success, stating, “The girls did great, the boys did great. It was a very successful meet.”

Coyle, who has signed a letter of intent to swim for Texas A&M University next season, has achieved success in elite-level club competitions, but a high school state championship had remained elusive. As SwimSwam reported, Coyle will join the Aggies in the fall of 2026. Competing in his sixth state meet, he had previously reached seven individual finals and six relay finals, with a previous best finish of third place.

“I went out there and gave it my best, and sure enough, I touched the wall first and I was a state champion,” Coyle recounted. “I remember looking at the board, and all I did was scream, ‘Yes!’ I’ve wanted that state championship for so long, and it was a rush of emotions.” The moment was shared with Kentucky Aquatics teammate Will Jones of Lexington Catholic, who finished third with a time 0.06 seconds behind Coyle, and a celebratory embrace with teammates and supporters.

Coyle’s performance wasn’t limited to the 50-yard freestyle. He earned three medals during the meet, including a third-place finish with Evan Perry, Beau Bostick, and Anders Petkus in the 200 medley relay (1:34.73), setting a new school record. He also secured third place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.34 seconds.

Evan Perry also contributed to Boyle County’s success, breaking a 29-year-old school record in the 100 breaststroke during preliminaries, ultimately finishing eighth in the final (1:00.50). On the girls’ side, Abigail Heath achieved the highest individual finish in program history, placing fifth in the 50 freestyle (24.50) and breaking her own school record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.35, finishing sixth. Heath, along with Ellie Wiglesworth, Ivy Sadler, and Becca Hoffman, also set a school record in the 200 medley relay, finishing fifth (1:50.68).

Danville’s Ella Bottom also made her mark, finishing eighth in the girls’ 1-meter diving competition with 465.50 points, an improvement from her 14th-place finish last season.
