In northern India, more than 300 homes and businesses belonging to the Muslim community have been demolished since Thursday as part of a crackdown led by the Hindu nationalist Indian People’s Party government. On Monday, a court ordered a halt to the demolitions while questioning whether they were part of an “ethnic cleansing exercise” by the state. Al Jazeera is reporting that more than 150 Muslims have also been detained in what some have described as a campaign of collective punishment following clashes broke out between Hindu and Muslim groups.
