Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass reported positive outcomes from city initiatives aimed at addressing violent crime and substance abuse in the MacArthur Park area. Speaking alongside LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell and Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, Bass highlighted a reduction in illegal activities since December.
Decline in Violent Crime
According to Chief McDonnell, intensified police presence led to a meaningful decrease in violent crime. He detailed a 46% drop in crimes against persons in the area.
specifically, McDonnell stated that in December 2024, there were “26 violent crimes, including 14 robberies and 12 aggravated assaults.” By February 2025, this number had decreased to “14 crimes against persons.”
“The LAPD has increased its enforcement efforts, expanded our outreach initiatives, and worked closely with our community partners to make the park and the area surrounding it safer, and these efforts are producing real results,” McDonnell said.
Further analysis of LAPD crime data suggests an overall reduction in robberies and aggravated assaults in the Rampart division’s patrol area between January 5 and March 1. However, the same data indicates a slight increase in reported rapes, rising from seven cases in January to nine in February (LAPD Crime Statistics, 2025). LAPD Crime Data
Addressing Mental Health and Overdoses
Beyond law enforcement, the city has also focused on mental health support and overdose prevention. Mayor Bass noted the deployment of the city’s CIRCLE team to address mental health crises in the area.
Councilmember Hernandez emphasized the impact of a full-time mobile overdose response team. “From the beginning of this year, they have saved 24 lives through reversing overdoses and distributed over 3,000 naloxone kits,” Hernandez said.
Community Concerns and Clean-up Efforts
Recognizing community concerns about sanitation, the city has undertaken extensive clean-up operations. Mayor Bass reported that “We’re bringing city services and resources to clean up the area,” and more than 200 tons of debris has been removed. She also emphasized ongoing engagement with “community members, business owners and vendors.”
Parents have also voiced concerns about safety and drug use in public areas. One father, recounted his fears saying “It’s kind of scary as there are a lot of people who are drugged up, and so we are scared to walk through there,”
Infrastructure Improvements
The city has also invested in infrastructure improvements to enhance safety and accessibility, including the installation of new solar street lights and improvements to public parking.

MacArthur Park Revitalization: An Interview with Community Leader Maria Sanchez
Archyde News recently sat down with Maria Sanchez,Executive Director of the MacArthur Park Community Alliance,to discuss the recent efforts to revitalize MacArthur Park and the surrounding area. Maria has been a tireless advocate for the park and its community for over a decade. Here’s what she had to say:
A Conversation on MacArthur Park Progress
Archyde News: Maria, welcome. The city is reporting positive changes in MacArthur Park. From your viewpoint, how would you assess the progress made in recent months regarding safety and community well-being?
Maria Sanchez: Thank you for having me. I’d say we’re seeing encouraging signs, definitely. The increased police presence, as Chief McDonnell mentioned, has had a noticeable impact on reducing violent crime, specifically looking at the reduced robberies within MacArthur Park. Our residents and local businesses feel safer knowing there’s a stronger deterrent. It’s promising, but the key is maintaining this momentum.
Addressing Root Causes and Mental Health
Archyde News: Mayor Bass emphasized the focus on mental health and overdose prevention. How effective have these initiatives been in addressing the underlying issues affecting the park?
Maria Sanchez: The expanded resources for mental health are crucial. Councilmember Hernandez’s work with the mobile overdose response team is literally saving lives. The fact that they’ve reversed so manny overdoses and distributed thousands of naloxone kits underscores the immediate need. However,we also need long-term solutions like accessible mental health services and substance abuse treatment programs to truly address the root causes.
Community Concerns and Cleanliness
Archyde News: Cleanliness has been a consistent concern for the community. Has the city addressed these concerns adequately, particularly as many parents have noted?
Maria Sanchez: We’ve definitely seen improvements in cleanliness. The city’s clean-up efforts, removing over 200 tons of debris, have made a difference. the visual impact is meaningful, but what’s more critically important is ensuring that regular maintenance continues. we need a sustainable plan to keep the park clean and safe for everyone, especially families.
Infrastructure and Long-term Impact
Archyde News: The city is also investing in infrastructure improvements, such as new streetlights. How important are these changes in the overall revitalization effort?
Maria Sanchez: Infrastructure improvements are vital. New streetlights enhance safety at night, making the park more accessible and inviting for families. Improvements to public parking also encourage greater usage of the park. These changes symbolize a commitment to the park’s long-term well-being.
Archyde News: Sustaining progress is key.As a community leader, what key actions could Los angeles City take in order to ensure the improvements will hold into the future?
Maria Sanchez: Sustaining progress is an ongoing investment. Consistent funding for mental health and substance abuse programs is a must. Maintaining a dedicated law enforcement presence is also critically important, but it must be combined with community-led initiatives like after-school programs, job training, and affordable housing. macarthur Park needs to be a place where everyone feels welcomed and supported and there must be constant commitment to maintain the improvements in our community.
Archyde News: what is one thing you’d most like to see happen in macarthur Park in the next year?
Maria Sanchez: I’d love to see the park become a vibrant hub for arts and culture, with regular community events and performances. This would not only enrich the lives of our residents but also attract visitors and boost the local economy. We need to continue fostering a sense of community ownership and pride in MacArthur Park.
Archyde News: Maria, thank you for sharing your insights. It’s clear that your dedication to the community is making a real difference.
