As she arrived at the ceremony dressed in red, the former president of Argentina from 2007 to 2015, indulged in a reaction which was filmed by TV cameras. As she entered the Congressional building, she extended her arm in the air and gave a middle finger, without turning around, as can be seen in the footage.

The scene quickly went viral in Argentina and reactions flooded. For Internet users, Cristina Kirchner’s middle finger is intended for Javier Milei. Media close to the new ultraliberal president believe that the left-wing politician has “insulted the Argentines”. As for Milei’s opponents, they had fun with the sequence. Artist David Brito even immortalized the scene in an embroidery. Milei did not react.

But according to the TN channel, which captured the scene, this gesture was intended “to people who insulted her upon her arrival”, “To join the Congress, Cristina Kirchner had to cross a square full of Milei activists who , in addition to showing up with lion masks or dollar bills, sang songs once morest her. In particular ‘Cristina is going to prison’”, reports the media.

In 2022, Cristina Kirchner was sentenced to six years in prison and life ineligibility for fraud and corruption during her presidential terms. Until now, she enjoyed parliamentary immunity. Now outgoing vice-president, she might be imprisoned, but the procedure would take several years.
