It has been almost three weeks since booksellers have witnessed a new phenomenon. Young people leave their shops with 10, 20 or even 50 manga under their arm. “The basket is close to 200 euros, with complete series”, we explain to the specialized bookstore Hayaku Shop (Paris). At BD Flash (Rambouillet), “A young girl took 43 manga on Tuesday”, says bookseller Kevin Lecathelinais, who recorded 195 manga bookings from a dozen high school students in one week.
The reason for this craze? The generalization of the Culture pass. Emmanuel Macron’s electoral promise, the device has been open to all French people aged 18 since May 21. It allows them to have an envelope of 300 euros to spend within two years on activities and cultural goods. Damien Cuier, president of the Culture pass, tells the Figaro that 295,000 young people registered in three weeks and many did not wait to start part of their capital.
