CHICAGO, May 1 (Xinhua) — At least six people died and more than 30 others were injured in a dust storm that caused pile-ups on a highway in Illinois, in the Midwestern United States on Monday. UNITED STATES.
State troopers responded to multiple crashes around 11 a.m. Monday in both directions of the I-55 freeway in Montgomery County, south of Illinois’ capital, Springfield, according to the Chicago Tribune, which quote the police.
About 20 commercial vehicles and 40 to 60 passenger cars were involved in the accidents, including two semi-trailers which caught fire.
The accidents were caused by “excessive winds blowing off the land and coming from agricultural fields on the highway, which reduced visibility to zero”, police said. I-55 is currently closed in both directions.
