Death toll in stampede to exit Indonesian soccer match climbs to 174

The death toll in the clash during the football match has risen to 174. Spectators clashed during an Indonesian league soccer match and riots ensued. Many people were killed in the stampede following the police used tear gas to control the conflict.

Fans clashed during the Arema Malang FC vs Persebaya Surabaya FC match in the Indonesian Premier League. The match was played at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang City, East Java Province. When Surabaya beat Arema Malang 3-2, the fans turned and clashed.

A preliminary investigation suggests that most of the deaths occurred in the stampede. The police said that others died due to respiratory failure. 34 people died inside the stadium and the rest died in the hospital. Many police officers were also killed in the incident. More than 200 people have been injured.
