Delhi Nature Bazaar Fire: 50 Shops Gutted, Losses in Crores

A massive fire ripped through the Nature Bazaar, a popular handicrafts market in South Delhi’s Chhattarpur area, on Sunday morning, destroying approximately 50 shops and causing significant financial losses to vendors. The blaze, which began around 7:37 am, prompted a large-scale firefighting operation, though thankfully, no injuries or casualties were reported, according to officials from the Delhi Fire Services (DFS).

The market, known for its temporary and semi-permanent stalls offering a diverse range of handicrafts, traditional clothing, and other items from across India, was largely unoccupied when the fire erupted. Local residents first noticed smoke emanating from the area and alerted emergency services. The incident occurred just hours before the start of an ongoing crafts exhibition organized by the non-governmental organization, Dastkar.

Firefighting Efforts and Damage Assessment

At least ten fire tenders were dispatched to the scene near Andheria Mor in the Lado Sarai area, battling the flames for several hours to prevent them from spreading to adjacent structures. Firefighters worked to contain the blaze and complete cooling operations to ensure complete extinguishment. The DFS confirmed that around 50 shops were completely gutted, resulting in extensive damage to goods and infrastructure.

Eyewitnesses reported that initial attempts to control the fire by market staff and nearby residents were quickly overwhelmed as the flames rapidly intensified and spread between stalls. Thick plumes of smoke billowed from the marketplace, visible across the surrounding area. Police were present to manage crowds and assist emergency responders.

Impact on Dastkar Exhibition and Vendors

The fire significantly impacted the ongoing “Dastkar” craft exhibition, which began on March 6th and was scheduled to continue until March 16th. The exhibition provided a platform for artisans and vendors from across the country to showcase and sell their products. Many of the affected stalls were part of this event, with approximately 37 stalls located on Gali-e-Khas road and an additional 5 participating in “Bonanza Bazaar” sales, according to reports from the Indian Express. Vendors had reportedly invested considerable resources in preparing for the exhibition.

Dastkar released a statement expressing devastation over the fire, noting the total destruction of goods, infrastructure, and equipment. The organization has not yet released a full assessment of the losses incurred by participating artisans.

Cause Under Investigation, Compensation Demanded

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet determined the origin of the blaze. Meanwhile, affected vendors are demanding compensation from the Delhi government to offset the substantial financial losses they have sustained. The extent of the financial damage is currently being assessed, but is expected to run into crores of rupees, according to Times Now News.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of informal markets to fire hazards and raises questions about fire safety measures in such areas. The Economic Times reported that no injuries were reported in the incident.

As investigations continue, authorities will likely focus on determining whether existing fire safety regulations were adequate and whether any negligence contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. The Delhi government is expected to address the vendors’ demands for compensation in the coming days.
