Delroy Lindo: On His Oscar Nod, Ryan Coogler & A Lifetime of Work

After a career spanning nearly five decades, veteran actor Delroy Lindo has received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The nod, for his powerful performance as Delta Slim in Ryan Coogler’s critically acclaimed film Sinners, is being celebrated as a long-overdue recognition of Lindo’s consistent and impactful work. The actor, known for his dedication to the craft, says the news was particularly meaningful because it was delivered by his son.

Lindo’s journey to this moment began in the 1970s with theatrical productions, including a staging of Of Mice and Men. He honed his skills at Yale Repertory Theatre under the guidance of Lloyd Richards, earning a Tony nomination in 1988 for his portrayal of Herald Loomis in August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. This foundation in theater, he says, shaped his instincts and prepared him for success on screen.

The 1990s saw Lindo gain prominence through collaborations with director Spike Lee on films like Malcolm X, Crooklyn, and Clockers. He consistently delivered nuanced performances, portraying morally complex characters that showcased his range. His television work as well garnered acclaim, including a Peabody Award for his role as Clarence Thomas in Strange Justice, and later as Adrian Boseman in The Good Fight.

A Career Built on Resilience

Lindo’s path wasn’t without its challenges. Following a difficult period in the early 2000s, he recalibrated through television, directing, and a return to the stage. This resilience ultimately led to a triumphant reunion with Spike Lee in Da 5 Bloods, a role that earned him awards from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics.

In Sinners, Lindo embodies Delta Slim, a blues musician whose presence resonates deeply within the film’s narrative. “I recognized from the very first reading of the script that it was a really particular and important story,” Lindo explained. “I never viewed it as a horror story. I always felt that Ryan was using this genre to tell a much larger and a more important story.” He praised Coogler’s collaborative spirit, describing a set where everyone felt valued and respected. “Ryan has an incredible generosity and openness of spirit. He makes everybody feel like a collaborator.”

The Influence of the Blues

Working on Sinners deepened Lindo’s appreciation for the blues, a genre he had previously encountered in concert performances featuring legends like Muddy Waters, Bobby Bland, and B.B. King. “In my lifetime, I’ve seen Muddy Waters, I’ve seen Bobby Bland, I’ve seen B.B. King—I’ve seen all those cats in concert,” he said. “I would say to you, that I have an enhanced appreciation for the music now as a result of doing this film because I have a clear perspective of what the music means culturally and historically.”

Despite the excitement surrounding the Oscar nomination, Lindo remains grounded. He emphasizes that his motivation isn’t driven by awards, but by the work itself. “One does not work for awards,” he stated. “You work as much as possible to do the things you need to do.” He acknowledged the joy his nomination has brought to others, amplifying the significance of the moment.

At this stage in his career, Lindo isn’t focused on reflecting on past achievements. His priority is continuing to take on challenging and meaningful roles. “I’m knocking on wood right now, but it’s the ability to continue to work, and continuing to do work that impacts the audiences, and to do work of quality,” he said. “That has always been, and will continue to be, the inspiration that keeps me going.”

What’s Next for the Nominee

Delroy Lindo’s Oscar nomination marks a significant milestone, not just for him, but for a career dedicated to impactful storytelling. As awards season continues, the attention surrounding Sinners and Lindo’s performance is likely to grow. The 98th Academy Awards will be held on March 2, 2026.
