Wisconsin’s 1st District Sees New Challenger: ER Nurse Mitchell Berman Enters Congressional Race

RAYMOND, Wis. – Mitchell Berman,a dedicated emergency room nurse, union member, and first-generation college graduate, has officially launched his campaign to represent Wisconsin’s First Congressional District. Berman aims to unseat incumbent Republican Bryan Steil, a former corporate lawyer, bringing a distinctly different background to the race.

For over two decades, berman has worked in healthcare, with the last ten years dedicated to serving veterans, service members, and their families at the VA. His proclamation highlights a commitment to prioritizing the needs of working families in a district often grappling with difficult choices.

“It’s time we had representatives who understand the realities of living on a tight budget,” Berman stated. “I’ve witnessed firsthand the unfeasible decisions patients face – choosing between essential healthcare and basic necessities like rent – while Washington remains unresponsive. I’m running for Congress to ensure health and well-being are placed above corporate interests.”

A campaign video released Tuesday showcases Berman’s roots in rural Wisconsin and his dedication to the people of the state. Raised in a small town, Berman embodies the values of hard work, integrity, and community. He financed his education through multiple jobs and student loans, becoming a union member during his college years.

Berman’s journey, from starting work at age twelve to his decade of service as a VA nurse, underscores his commitment to building a life based on perseverance rather than privilege. He and his wife are raising a family and he hopes to bring a people-first approach to Washington.

The First Congressional District is considered a key battleground, identified as a “District in Play” by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The district includes Janesville, Kenosha, Racine, Beloit, Elkhorn, whitewater, and Milwaukee suburbs like Cudahy, St. Francis, and South Milwaukee. While Donald Trump narrowly carried the district in 2024 with 51% of the vote, recent Wisconsin Supreme Court elections saw Justices Janet protasiewicz and Susan Crawford win by notable margins – 6 and 6.5 points respectively – demonstrating a shifting political landscape.

The primary election is scheduled for August 11, 2026, followed by the general election on November 3rd. Interested voters can find more information about Mitchell berman and his campaign at bermanforcongress.com.

Could be a talking point? Bryon Steil wants to cut federal funding to Milwaukee County Transit System because of the financial bind in which the service finds itself. Some people skip paying fares on the bus, but so many folks in Milwaukee and surrounding communities and counties rely on and pay for the service. Fare cheats should not be the call for cuts in funding. This part of the state seems to get the short end of the stick and this is another pound of flesh being greedily eyed.
