“Dengue Outbreak in Ethiopia’s Afar Region: Cases, Symptoms, & Impact on Public Health”

In Ethiopiaas part of monitoring the dengue outbreak in the Afar region (see news item 20787), the World Health Organization (WHO) reports a total of 1,638 suspected and confirmed cases and nine associated deaths (case fatality rate = 0.5%) in Logia woredas and of Millein the region, between April 4 and May 10 of this year.

Mille district reported the highest number of cases (1,573, 96%) while Logia district reported 4% (65) of the total cases. Most cases are aged 15 and older (1,147.70%). The most common clinical manifestations are joint pain (99.4%), headache (98%), chills (97%), vomiting (80%) and fever (64%).

According to the WHO, dengue infections were first reported in Ethiopia in 2013, when a dengue-related outbreak occurred in the city of Dire Dawa. Since then, dengue cases and outbreaks have increased, with a significant impact on public health. Ethiopia has seen almost annual outbreaks since 2013, devastating an already fragile health system and economy.
