The University at Buffalo (UB) School of Dental Medicine recently hosted its 11th annual Dentistry Smiles on Veterans program, offering free comprehensive dental care to veterans in Western New York. The event, held on March 6, 2026, at the UB Dental Clinic in Squire Hall on the South Campus, provided crucial services to those who have served the nation.
This year’s program, the 11th iteration of Dentistry Smiles on Veterans, addressed a significant gap in healthcare access for many veterans. Many U.S. Veterans do not receive dental benefits through the Veterans Administration, creating a need for accessible and affordable oral healthcare options. The UB School of Dental Medicine stepped in to fill that need, providing a vital service to the community.
Faculty and students from the School of Dental Medicine volunteered their time and expertise to offer a range of treatments, including screenings, cleanings, tooth extractions, and denture repairs. According to WGRZ, veterans from across Western New York benefited from the free care provided.
“I suppose it’s nice to be able to actually kind of see all the school work you’ve been doing, all of the hands-on activity that you can actually set that into perspective a little bit when you’re actually able to work on people,” said UB dental student Danielle Sudol in a statement to 2 On Your Side. “But it’s nice to kind of run something like this, and just see so many happy people leave.”
A Tradition of Service
The Dentistry Smiles on Veterans program has become an annual tradition at UB, demonstrating the school’s commitment to community outreach and service to those who have served in the military. The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine first launched the program to address the oral health needs of veterans, recognizing the challenges they often face in accessing affordable dental care.
The event as well included a presentation of the colors by the Niagara Falls Air Force Reserve, adding a patriotic element to the day. Sudol emphasized the importance of giving back to veterans, stating, “They’ve done so much in terms of what they’ve been able to give up for us, and so if you’re able to give up a Saturday, I don’t think it’s any match for what they’ve been able to do for us.”
Impact and Future Plans
The Dentistry Smiles on Veterans program not only provides essential dental care but also offers valuable hands-on experience for dental students. The program allows students to apply their classroom learning in a real-world setting, even as simultaneously serving a deserving population. The University at Buffalo continues to prioritize initiatives that support the health and well-being of veterans in the region.
As Veterans Day approaches, the UB School of Dental Medicine’s commitment to providing free dental care to veterans serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting those who have served our country. The program’s continued success relies on the dedication of faculty, students, and volunteers who generously donate their time and expertise.
