PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A landslide triggered by heavy monsoon rains struck a house in a remote area of northwest Pakistan, killing 12 people, most of them children, an emergency official said Friday.

Inayat Ali, a state emergency services official, said the avalanche occurred in Upper Dir in Afghanistan’s nearby Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. He added that rescue teams found the bodies of nine minors, including two women and one man.

Ali did not provide further details.

Authorities have warned that heavy rains that began last month could cause landslides and flash floods across Pakistan. Since July 1, more than 275 people have died due to rainfall events across the country.

In Pakistan, the annual monsoon season runs from July to September. Scientists blame climate change for the increase in rainfall in recent years.

In 2022, rains flooded a third of the country and claimed 1,739 lives.
