Striker Sasa Kalajdzic brought the VfB Stuttgart a successful year-end and led his team into the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. Thanks to a goal by the Austrian national player in the 15th minute, the Swabians won 1-0 (1-0) against their Baden rival SC Freiburg, but had to tremble until stoppage time.
It is the culmination of a strong year at VfB. As a climber, he is in a respectable seventh place in the table in the Bundesliga during the winter break – and he is now also in the cup in the round of the last 16 teams. For the last form strong Freiburg, however, is the third time in a row in the second round.
Werder Bremen, on the other hand, easily walked into the round of 16. The team of coach Florian Kohfeldt deservedly won 3-0 (2-0) at the second division Hannover 96. Theodor Gebre Selassie (30th) and Josh Sargent (32nd) gave Werder an early lead with a double strike, Jean-Manuel Mbom (60.) then made everything clear. Hanover remained pale overall.
This ends the year in which Werder only stayed in the Bundesliga through relegation in the summer with a little happy ending for the traditional club. After four defeats in the last five Bundesliga games, the Hanseatic team didn’t manage everything, but in the end the favorite bit their way through the northern duel and can now breathe deeply at Christmas.
Rot-Weiss Essen throws out the next favorite
The traditional fourth division club Rot-Weiss Essen is in the round of 16 for the first time in 13 years after a cup surprise. The undefeated leaders of the Regionalliga West fought the neighboring second division club Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-2 (2-1) on Wednesday and also rewarded themselves with a bonus of 700,000 euros. Essen had fewer opportunities, but used them consistently. Simon Engelmann (15th), Marco Kehl-Gomez (39th) and Oguzhan Kefkir (70th) scored against the quarter-finalists of the previous season, who after four league wins in a row by Rouwen Hennings (36th) meanwhile equalized. The goalscorer brought the guests up again with a penalty kick (87th).
After Essen had survived the first pressure phase in Düsseldorf and a huge chance from Edgar Prib (4th), it dared to go forward – and scored directly. Fortuna goalkeeper Raphael Wolf should have parried Engelmann’s low shot. It took the guests around 20 minutes to sort them out. Henning’s cracking left-footed shot was countered by Kehl-Gomez immediately with his head on the muddy lawn on Hafenstrasse. Fortuna couldn’t think of anything else. The Dusseldorf had already embarrassed themselves in the quarter-finals at the regional division 1. FC Saarbrücken last season.
Wolfsburg easily comes through one lap
Neither the corona virus nor SV Sandhausen stopped VfL Wolfsburg on the way to the second round of the cup. The Lower Saxony defeated the second division 16. effortlessly with 4: 0 (3: 0), after 45 minutes the decision in favor of the Bundesliga club was made. Yannick Gerhardt opened the scoring with a deflected shot in the 27th minute. Three minutes later, Wout Weghorst was successful with a header. Joao Victor (41.) overcame Sandhausen’s goalkeeper Rick Wulle a third time. Weghorst (90. + 1) ensured the final score.
