Dial M for Murder: City Lights Theater Review

San Jose audiences are in for a thrilling ride as City Lights Theater Company presents Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of Frederick Knott’s classic thriller, “Dial M for Murder.” The production, which begins performances on Thursday, March 12, 2026, promises a twisty and suspenseful experience, building on the foundation of Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film. The play delves into themes of jealousy, deception, and the dangerous consequences of obsession, all wrapped in a meticulously crafted plot and sharp dialogue.

The story centers on Tony Wendice, who becomes convinced his wife, Margot, is having an affair with Maxine. Driven by jealousy, Tony hatches a plot to eliminate Margot, enlisting the support of a former acquaintance. However, as the plan unfolds, it becomes increasingly complex, and the characters find themselves entangled in a web of suspicion and danger. The production aims to deliver a fresh take on a well-known story, with a focus on the psychological intricacies of the characters and the escalating tension of the narrative.

Gwynnevere Cristobal stars as Margot, the object of both Tony’s possessiveness and suspicion. Maria Marquis portrays Maxine, the woman Tony believes is involved with his wife. George Psarras takes on the role of Tony, the man consumed by jealousy and driven to desperate measures. Drew Benjamin Jones plays Lesgate, and Nick Mandracchia is cast as the Inspector. The cast also includes Sydney Harmon, Tiffany Cartagena, and Matt Davis as understudies. George Psarras is a member of Actors’ Equity Association.

A Modern Take on a Classic Thriller

Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of “Dial M for Murder” isn’t a simple rehash of the original. According to City Lights Theater Company, the new version is “quicker-paced, the dialogue is snappier, the women are smarter and more complex.” The Times of San Diego noted the adaptation maintains the core motive for murder while updating the dynamics between the characters. Hatcher previously delighted audiences with his work on “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” for City Lights in 2015, demonstrating his skill in bringing classic stories to life with a contemporary edge.

The play explores the motivations behind murder, listing possibilities such as “money, fear, jealousy, revenge,” but ultimately suggesting that “protecting someone you love” can also be a powerful driving force. This dynamic is particularly evident in the complex relationship between Margot and Maxine, who, despite attempting a year-long separation, find themselves drawn back together. The production highlights the dangerous allure of their connection, suggesting that risk is an inherent part of their affair.
