The increase in cost of Qualcomm chipsets over the years was indicated by the user in a list. It is mentioned that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is sold for 1,400 yuan, around US$200, to Qualcomm partners.
For comparison purposes, the Snapdragon 870 would have sold for 630 yuan or the equivalent of US$89 in 2021, less than half the value of the latest chip. The price of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was 1,160 yuan ($160).
These values may explain why Samsung raised the price of the Galaxy S24 Ultra in the US by US$100 compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra and launched other models in the series with an Exynos chip in several markets such as Brazil.
It is also reported that this trend should not stop at the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 should be even more expensive as it has custom cores from TSMC for Qualcomm, which should guarantee superior performance.
Unfortunately, this means that the next generation of cell phones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 should be even more expensive. Manufacturers don’t have much choice: the alternatives are the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 or an Exynos chip from Samsung, but Qualcomm remains the users’ favorite for its greater energy efficiency.
