A third pack of wolves obviously seems to have settled on the Hautes-Fagnes plateau. Experts from the Walloon administration have collected clues to show that one of the male “offspring” of the couple formed by Akela and Maxima himself founded a pack with a still unidentified female.

The observation started from a photo of a young cub taken at a respectable distance (20 kilometers) from the supposed den of Akela and Maxima. An age at which the animal, which is incapable of feeding itself, is not supposed to take such a distance from its parents. The conclusion was obvious to the experts: the cub is part of another pack. Verifications made, it was founded by a wolf with the sweet name of GW2543m, born in 2021, from the Akela-Maxima couple.

The young wolf undoubtedly settled on the outskirts of the parental territory where “he would have captured a dispersing female”, indicates the Walloon Wolf Network. The latter named the new pack: the South Hautes Fagnes pack. It would be made up of at least 4 cubs, the identifications indicate.

The first pack is that of Maxima and Akela, now called the Northern High Fens pack. She had a third litter in the spring including at least 5 cubs. The second pack is that of the North Eifel which, for its first litter, had at least four 4 cubs.
