Dismantling and Reuse of Hénâ aux Awirs Slag Heap in Flémalle: A Colossal and Unique Project in Europe

2023-11-15 19:13:34

A colossal and unique project in Europe began 6 years ago in the town of Flémalle in the province of Liège. The Hénâ aux Awirs slag heap, which threatened to collapse on the village located just below, is being dismantled. These so-called fly ashes will then be used to make cement. Currently, more than half of the slag heap has been evacuated.

This slag heap has existed since 1952 and is made up of ashes from the combustion of coal from a former power station. And to evacuate the ashes, it’s not that simple. A transporter bench worthy of the most beautiful roller coaster was built across the valley to avoid nuisance for local residents.
