Djibouti Political Attack: The Shocking Story of Moustapha Hassan and Idriss Awaleh

In the early morning of November 6, 2016, a taxi driver alerted the police following discovering near the Porte de Namur, in a shopping district of the Belgian capital, Moustapha Hassan lying on the side of the road and bleeding profusely from his eye sockets, recalls the stop. Taken to hospital, the man survived but lost his sight, his attacker having gouged out his eyeballs with his hands during the altercation.

He had declared to the police that he had been the victim of a political attack. A dozen hours later, Idriss Awaleh, a Djiboutian and Dutch national born in Somalia, presented himself at another Brussels hospital with loose teeth and cuts on his face, before being arrested. According to the Court of Appeal, the two men were both involved in the opposition to the ruling party in Djibouti, the formation of President Ismaël Omar Guelleh in office since 1999.

But they had fallen out violently following conflicts between rival factions.
