There will be no strike on Saturday within the Dnata company, which provides part of the ground handling at Geneva airport, the SSP union indicated on Friday evening. The social conflict within the company, however, has not been resolved.
Discussions between the Emirati company and the SSP union before the Chamber of Collective Labor Relations (CRCT) failed to find common ground. A walkout from Sunday morning cannot therefore be ruled out, said SSP union secretary Jamshid Pouranpir late Friday evening.
On Thursday, Dnata offered staff a salary increase of 1.7% before proposing 3% on Friday, says the latter. According to an anonymous online survey conducted by the SSP, 93.8% of employees refuse management’s proposal and 87.2% say they are ready to strike. The union is demanding a 5% increase in salaries and the implementation of several bonuses linked to the arduousness of the work, declares Jamshid Pouranpir.
Up to 60,000 passengers per day
A strike notice was voted on Monday by half of the employees as the airport prepares to welcome up to 60,000 passengers per day at the end of the year. Supported by the SSP union, the employees opposed the change in the percentages of contributions for professional pensions which was imposed on them by management. They feared significant drops in income upon retirement, up to 120,000 francs, according to their calculations.
Dnata employs around 600 people in Geneva. Its employees take care of several tasks such as issuing tickets, transporting passengers and baggage on planes, air freight and even de-icing planes. The company operates on behalf of the airlines Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Iberia, Air Lingus and, in part, Easyjet.
