Do half of seniors retire unemployed?

THE CHEKING PROCESS – So says presidential candidate Eric Zemmour. Is right ?

THE QUESTION. Are many French people ending their professional lives unemployed? This is what Éric Zemmour said on the set of C8 Thursday evening against Jean-Luc Mélenchon. According to the candidate of the Reconquest party, “half of the people retiring today are already unemployed and that’s absolutely outrageous“. To curb senior unemployment, he proposes “to impose on the bosses not to fire people between 55 and 65” putting in place “a bonus-malus system” financial. The former journalist also wants to raise the retirement age to 64.

Are the figures put forward by Éric Zemmour in line with the reality of the labor market? Would imposing penalties on companies that lay off seniors really be effective against unemployment among the over 55s? Does postponing the retirement age also improve the employability of seniors?
