Doctor Pauses Medicine to Thru-Hike the Colorado Trail | The Trek

The demands of a medical career, whereas deeply rewarding, can as well be all-consuming. For Dr. Britt, thirteen years dedicated to training and practice culminated in a profound question: what lies beyond the relentless cycle of life, sickness, and healing? Driven by a desire for self-discovery and a yearning for the restorative power of the wilderness, she’s embarking on a new kind of journey – a thru-hike of the Colorado Trail.

Growing up in rural Nebraska, Dr. Britt always harbored a dream of becoming a physician, a goal achieved through unwavering determination and a commitment to rigorous study. But the path to an M.D. Wasn’t without its sacrifices. Now, after years spent navigating the complexities of modern medicine, she’s trading the hospital for the high country, seeking a different kind of challenge and a deeper connection with herself and the natural world.

Dr. Britt’s journey began with a childhood ambition in a town where a four-year college degree, let alone medical school, wasn’t a common path. She embraced a pragmatic approach to her education, focusing on minimizing debt and building a strong scientific foundation. This dedication carried her through medical school, residency in Seattle, a fellowship in Providence, Rhode Island, and ultimately to full-time practice in Colorado, where she lived with her husband until January 2026.

It was in Seattle, surrounded by the North Cascades, Mount Rainier, and Olympic National Parks, that Dr. Britt discovered a passion for the outdoors. Her first backcountry camping trips in 2015 sparked a desire for more extended immersion in nature. She continued to explore the mountains during her residencies in New England and while practicing in Colorado, but always within the constraints of a demanding medical schedule. Now, she’s ready to fully embrace the freedom and solitude of the trail.

A Pause for Reflection

The decision to step away from medicine wasn’t sudden. Dr. Britt describes feeling a growing disconnect between the achievements on her resume and a deeper sense of personal fulfillment. The long hours, the emotional toll, and the sacrifices made to her personal life had taken their toll. She realized she’d been living “in the margins,” experiencing the world in short bursts, and wondered what she might discover with more time and space for introspection.

“Thirteen years is a long time to pursue a single goal,” she reflects. “The version of Britt who graduated high school had no idea how the road to an M.D. Would shape—and sometimes scar—her.” Despite her love for patient care and the camaraderie of her colleagues, she felt a need to recalibrate and explore other facets of her identity.

Why Thru-Hiking?

The allure of a thru-hike, a long-distance trail completed in a single season, presented itself as a compelling challenge. Dr. Britt acknowledges her status as a beginner, relying on research and social media for inspiration. She’s aware of the physical and mental demands, the potential for discomfort, and the uncertainties of life in the backcountry. But the prospect of quiet miles, solitude, and a deeper connection with nature outweighed her fears.

“I know physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion well,” she explains. “Thru-hiking will bring many of the same challenges.” She’s prepared to learn from her mistakes and embrace the unknown, viewing the journey as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery.

Dr. Britt will be sharing her experiences as a blogger for The Trek, documenting her preparation and her (almost) 500-mile southbound thru-hike on the Colorado Trail (CT) this summer. The Colorado Trail spans 486 miles from Denver to Durango, offering a diverse landscape of forests, mountains, and alpine meadows.

As she prepares to embark on this new adventure, Dr. Britt embodies a spirit of courage and curiosity. Her story is a reminder that it’s never too late to redefine success and pursue a path that aligns with one’s deepest values. The trail awaits, and with it, the promise of self-discovery and a renewed appreciation for the wild beauty of the mountains.
