Dormagen Gears Up for Crucial Blood Donation Drive with Past Support
DORMAGEN – Ormagen,a long-standing supporter of vital blood donation initiatives,is once again opening its urban premises free of charge for an upcoming campaign. The next possibility for residents to contribute will be on August 21st at the Technical City Hall, running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Mayor Erik Lierenfeld emphasized the universal need for blood, stating, “Each of us can count ourselves lucky if they never need such a blood donation in their life. However, this can change from one moment to the other – for example through an accident or a serious illness. From now on, you can suddenly be dependent on one or more transfusions. This can affect any of us! Thus, they donate all blood and save their fellow human beings and possibly themselves.”
The critical demand for blood products in Germany remains high. Daily, 15,000 blood units are required for transfusions, with an additional 12,000 held in reserve for large-scale emergency situations. Birgit Baust, DRK area consultant for the blood donation service West, highlighted the ongoing need for community participation. “We need new blood donations every day to be able to supply all hospitals. This is only 700 to 900 blood units for the Düsseldorf and cologne region,” she commented during a discussion with Mayor lierenfeld.
The swift processing of donated blood ensures its availability. Erythrocyte concentrates, crucial for compensating for sudden blood loss from accidents or surgeries, can be ready as early as the next day. Thrombocytes are essential for blood clotting, aiding in wound healing and used in treatments like chemotherapy. Blood plasma, the third key component, supports blood coagulation and the immune system, vital for individuals with clotting disorders or liver issues.
The eligibility for blood donation includes individuals who are at least 18 years old and in good health. All donations undergo rigorous testing for diseases such as HIV and hepatitis. Donors will be notified if any health concerns are identified through their blood. to streamline the process and minimize wait times, the DRK strongly advises advance registration via their website at www.blutspendedienst-west.de. However, walk-in donors are also warmly welcomed.
