Dr. Joseph L. Goldstein: Nobel Laureate for Cholesterol Research and Cardiovascular Health

He was born in Sumter, South Carolina, United States on April 18, 1940. He studied medicine at the University of Washington and at Lee (Virginia).

He began working at Massachusetts General Hospital. Since 1977 he was director of the Center for Molecular Genetics at the University of Texas.

He obtained the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1985, which he shared with Michael S. Brown for his work on cholesterol.

The objective of these researchers was to discover the relationship between the increase in blood cholesterol levels and the formation of vascular fatty deposits and arteriosclerosis.

Goldstein and Brown and demonstrated the existence in the cell membrane of receptors that capture and degrade plasmatic LDL (low-density lipoproteins).
