Exhibition-residency

No more rigid boundaries between exhibition spaces and artists’ studios! Since 2017, General Stores have made hybrid spaces their trademark with the concept of exhibition-residency for emerging artists. At the start of 2024, it is the turn of Inès Di Folco Jemni, 30 years old, of Tunisian origin, to invest this beautiful 1,000 m2 surface area with her boundless creativity.
Graduated from Fine Arts in 2018, this “figurative painter”, as she defines herself, draws inspiration for her brightly colored oil paintings from vibrant sources such as literature, mythologies, anthropology, music, but also Sufism and shamanism.

Like at home

With this exhibition, she navigates between the Caribbean and Africa. “Some of my paintings were produced on my return from Havana. Others connect to my family stories, to genealogy… In a sense, I am part of a great classical pictorial tradition. But I readapt the myths with different skin colors, feminist points of view…”
The event represents an opportunity for the young designer. “This is the first time I have exhibited in such a large space. It allows me to bring together paintings from different periods, to extract from private or public collections paintings that I no longer saw…”
To stage her works, she chose to work around the idea of the living room, at once a living room, a reception area and an artistic space. “I want the visitor to be able to relax, sit down and not remain, as the codes require, standing, frozen in front of the works,” she explains.

A language of the imagination

Often at the height of children with adapted cartels, its salon is organized around its favorite themes and has been named Le Salon des songes. “For me, paintings are a language of the cerebral imagination, little worlds that arise from my head, my dream gallery…” she describes.
Moreover, another dream will take shape and come to life in his workshop installed in the General Stores throughout the duration of the exhibition. Enough to meet the artist and understand all the mysteries of his creation.
