El Fasher, North Darfur – A drone strike targeted a 16-truck United Nations convoy delivering critical food assistance to Sudan’s North Darfur region on Wednesday, resulting in the destruction of three vehicles. Fortunately, all personnel and drivers involved escaped unharmed, according to the World Food Program (WFP).
cindy McCain, the head of the WFP, issued a stark statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, emphasizing the urgency of the situation: “Our drivers survived, but 3 trucks carrying life-saving aid were DESTROYED. Attacks must stop. Safe, sustained access must be guaranteed.”
Initial reports from U.N. Associate Spokesperson Daniela Gross indicated all 16 trucks were destroyed. However, subsequent assessments confirmed that three trucks were directly impacted by the attack and caught fire.
Escalating Violence and Humanitarian Crisis
This incident marks the second attack on a U.N.convoy headed to North Darfur in the past three months. In early June, an attack while awaiting clearance for el-fasher, the regional capital, resulted in five fatalities and multiple injuries.
The attack occurs against a backdrop of escalating conflict that has gripped Sudan since April 2023. The fighting, stemming from tensions between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has triggered a devastating humanitarian crisis.
According to U.N. agencies, approximately 40,000 peopel have been killed and nearly 13 million displaced due to the ongoing violence. A staggering 25 million people across Sudan are currently facing acute hunger.
Darfur at the Epicenter of the Crisis
The RSF and its allies announced the establishment of a parallel government in areas under their control, primarily within the Darfur region. This move has coincided with mounting allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity, currently under investigation.
El Fasher, the only Darfur capital not currently held by the RSF,is under siege, with residents facing starvation. The five states comprising Darfur are particularly vulnerable.
A famine was officially declared in the Zamzam displacement camp in North Darfur over a year ago. The risk of famine has since expanded to encompass 17 areas in Darfur and the adjacent Kordofan region, west of Khartoum.
Did You Know? Sudan’s conflict is not solely a political or military struggle; it’s a complex web of ethnic tensions, resource scarcity, and past grievances.
