ECB Considers Joining European T20 Tournament | Cricket News

Cricket fans across Europe could soon have a new international tournament to follow, as Cricket Ireland pushes forward with plans for a ‘Euro Nations Cup’ set to launch as early as 2027. The proposed Twenty20 tournament aims to boost the profile of the sport on the continent and provide valuable competitive opportunities for emerging cricketing nations.

Discussions are currently underway with key stakeholders, including the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), to finalize the format and details of the competition. Whereas the idea has been floated in the past, recent performances by European teams at the global level, coupled with support from the International Cricket Council, appear to have given the project renewed momentum. The potential inclusion of established cricketing powers like England is seen as crucial to the tournament’s commercial success and appeal to broadcasters.

ECB Engagement and Potential Format

The ECB held initial talks with Cricket Ireland during England’s white-ball series last September, according to reports. England’s participation would not only add significant commercial clout but as well address logistical challenges, particularly regarding the availability of international-standard venues across Europe. Currently, a lack of suitable grounds outside of established cricketing nations presents a hurdle for hosting international matches.

While historically lukewarm to similar proposals, the ECB is now giving the idea “food for thought,” spurred by strong showings from teams like Italy and Scotland at the recent T20 World Cup. Scotland, in particular, ran England close during the tournament, demonstrating the growing competitiveness of European cricket. The tournament is envisioned as a T20 format event, ideally slotted early in the summer schedule.

MacNeice Optimistic, Details Still Under Discussion

Cricket Ireland chair Brian MacNeice expressed confidence in the project’s progress, stating that it’s “much more than a kind of fanciful idea” compared to this time last year. “There are practicalities of logistics and existing broadcasting and all that sort of stuff,” MacNeice acknowledged, “That’s the complicated kind of piece that has to be pieced together. So that work is ongoing.” He added that Cricket Ireland is “certainly starting to consider how we can create room and build it into our future plans.”

MacNeice indicated that the conversations have evolved significantly and he anticipates further developments “in the next couple of months.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration with multiple stakeholders to bring the tournament to fruition.

England’s 2028 T20 World Cup Qualification and Player Development

With England already securing their place in the 2028 T20 World Cup – qualifying through their performance in the Super 8s of a recent tournament – a European tournament could provide a valuable platform for developing emerging players. The competition would offer opportunities for squad rotation and experimentation, allowing England to build depth ahead of future international assignments.

The England cricket team recently toured Ireland in September 2025, playing a three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series at The Village in Dublin, winning the series 2-0. The fixtures were confirmed in August 2024 as part of Ireland’s 2025 home international season.

What’s Next for the Euro Nations Cup?

While the Euro Nations Cup is not yet a certainty, the momentum appears to be building. The next few months will be critical as stakeholders work to address logistical and broadcasting challenges. Further announcements regarding the tournament’s format, participating nations, and schedule are expected soon. The success of this venture could significantly elevate the profile of cricket in Europe and foster greater competition among emerging nations.
