Eels star Iongi avoids suspension over social media photos, Storm seek investment

Wollongong, Australia – St George Illawarra Dragons prop Loko Pasifiki Tonga is recovering well after a concerning incident at training on Thursday that initially sparked fears of a serious neck injury. The 20-year-old forward was rushed to Wollongong Hospital after experiencing tingling in his hands following a tackle during a team session, but has since been cleared of any structural damage.

The scare prompted a swift response from medical staff, with Tonga immediately placed in a neck brace and transported by ambulance for precautionary scans. While the initial uncertainty caused concern for teammates and fans, the results proved reassuring, allowing Tonga to return home later that evening. The incident highlights the inherent risks involved in contact sports and the importance of prioritizing player safety.

Tonga himself described the incident, explaining he “got tangled up in a tackle…and had a bit of whiplash.” He added, “In the moment I heard a bit. I also had tingling in my hands. I fell to the ground in the hope it would relieve the pain.” He expressed relief at the positive diagnosis, stating, “Everything came back perfect – there was nothing broken and nothing too scary, which was a huge relief.”

Recovery and Return to Play

Dragons coach Shane Flanagan provided an update over the weekend, confirming Tonga is “back doing some rehab running today.” Flanagan noted he is “a bit sore, but he’ll be OK,” and the team will “reassess him next week.” The coach expressed gratitude that there was “no damage, and he’ll be right in the next week or two.” Tonga is aiming to resume contact perform this week, with the goal of returning to the field as soon as possible.

Despite the scare, Tonga was originally named in the squad for the NSW Cup game against Parramatta on Sunday, but was understandably ruled out. Winger David Fale starred in his absence, scoring a hat-trick as the Dragons secured an easy win. Tonga played 10 NRL games for the Dragons last year, demonstrating his potential as a valuable addition to the team’s forward pack.

Storm Seek Investment for Junior Pathways

In other NRL news, the Melbourne Storm are reportedly seeking a private investor to bolster their junior development programs. According to reports, the club’s owners – including Matt Tripp, Bart Campbell, and Gerry Ryan – are not looking to sell the club outright, but are open to external investment to strengthen their pathways and upgrade training facilities. The Storm have a strong track record of success, having appeared in 10 NRL grand finals, but lack the financial backing of a leagues club, putting them at a disadvantage compared to clubs with such resources. The AFL invests over $50 million annually in junior development in northern states, while Victorian rugby league pathways receive limited support from the NRL.

Isaiah Iongi to Avoid Suspension Over Social Media Photos

Parramatta Eels fullback Isaiah Iongi will not face suspension despite photos circulating on social media appearing to show him smoking a substance. The NRL issued Iongi with a breach notice, stating the imagery “brought the game into disrepute,” but the incident will not prevent him from playing in Saturday’s derby against his former club, Penrith. Sources claim the photos were posted without his consent and are several years old. Iongi has five business days to respond to the breach notice. The case was the first to be adjudicated by the NRL’s newly appointed Independent Decision Maker, former Supreme Court judge Geoff Bellew.

Iongi has been in strong form for the Eels, playing in each of their three games since the photos emerged, including wins over Brisbane and St George Illawarra. He has quickly established himself as the first-choice fullback following Clint Gutherson’s move to the Dragons.

The focus now shifts back to Tonga’s recovery and his potential return to the field. The Dragons will be hoping for a swift and full recovery for the young prop as they continue their 2026 NRL campaign. The club will continue to monitor his progress and provide updates as they become available.
