El Salvador builds “mega-prison” for 40,000 inmates as a sign against gang crime – International

The “mega prison” in El Salvador, which was only recently presented, is said to be the largest in America. On Friday, the Salvadoran government moved the first 2,000 or so accused gang members to the 40,000-person prison in Tecoluca, around 75 kilometers south-east of the capital San Salvador. It is the latest move by the El Salvador government in a controversial and crackdown on crime. For comparison: the Upper Austrian town of Steyr has almost as many inhabitants.
