Electoral Registry of Guatemala suspends the Semilla party of President-elect Arévalo

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — The Registry of Citizens of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Guatemala suspended the Semilla party of President-elect Bernardo Arévalo on Thursday by order of a judge.

The suspension had been issued in July minutes before it was known that Arévalo had gone to the second presidential round, but it was not applied because the law prevents suspending a party while the electoral process is underway, which ended this Tuesday.

According to what the spokesman for the Registry, Luis Gerardo Ramírez, told The Associated Press, the Semilla Movement will not be able to hold assemblies or administrative procedures. Meanwhile, its implication in other institutions such as Congress, which must give office to the deputies of that party, is unknown.

As long as the sentence – which is appealable – is final, legislators might not join committees in Parliament and would be considered independent, without party representation.
